Former Man United star Wout Weghorst ‘set for Ajax medical TODAY as Dutch club reach agreement with Burnley for the striker’

Weghorst, 32, currently plays for Championship side Burnley, but has made just 22 appearances for the club since arriving at Turf Moor in January 2022.

And after two brief outings as a substitute this term, he is set to leave the club to move to Ajax, with his medical lined up for later today, according to De Telegraaf.

The Dutch outlet reports that Ajax and Burnley reached a full agreement on Tuesday evening for a fee believed to be significantly below €5m (£4.2m).

Weghorst has had three separate loan spells since moving to England two-and-a-half years ago.

One of those was at United, as the giant striker spent the second half of the 2022-23 season at Old Trafford.

Weghorst played 31 matches under Erik ten Hag, scoring just twice during this period. But he did help the Red Devils win silverware, starting the 2-0 Carabao Cup final win over Newcastle in February 2023.

After loan spells at Besiktas and Hoffenheim either side of his time at United, Weghorst is now set to get a permanent switch to Ajax.

Speaking about the prospect of moving back to his homeland, Weghorst recently told Kicker: ‘For me, the total package has to be right, we are having our fourth child and we have travelled a lot as a family in recent years.

‘Ajax is the biggest club in the Netherlands, I don’t need to say more.’

Ajax have already missed out on Feyenoord pair Calvin Stengs and Justin Bijlow this summer, but are now on the verge of landing Weghorst, who scored the winning goal for the Netherlands in their opening game at Euro 2024 against Poland before Ronald Koeman’s men went on to reach the semi-finals.

Weghorst’s arrival could spell the end for Chuba Akpom at Ajax, just one year after he joined the club from Middlesbrough.

The Englishman scored 11 goals in 25 league games last season, but may be left looking for a new club in the coming days, with Weghorst expected to move above him in the pecking order.
