Former Leicester boss Craig Shakespeare has died at the age of 60 after a short fight with cancer and among the tributes to flood in for him, ex-Man United captain Harry Maguire has sent a message
Harry Maguire has hailed his “incredible” former boss Craig Shakespeare after his death.
The former Leicester City boss has passed away at the age of 60 following a brief battle with cancer. Shakespeare confirmed he had contracted the disease in October 2023 and had been undergoing treatment.
A statement from his family via the League Managers Association announced that he had passed away on Thursday. Tributes have since poured in for Shakespeare.
Manchester United and ex-Leicester star Maguire was among those to share his own heartfelt words for his former boss. Taking to social media, the England defender said: “The man who signed me for Leicester, the man who gave me so much belief, the man I learnt so much from. I will be forever grateful. Football will miss you, life will miss you.
An incredible man. My thoughts are with all his family at this difficult time. RIP Shakey,” alongside a heart emoji.
A number of Maguire’s former Leicester and England teammates also followed suit in paying tribute after learning the news. Ex-Foxes goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel wrote: “Devastated beyond words.
An absolutely fantastic coach, one of the best I have ever seen, but more importantly, an incredible human being. He taught me so much, and I am just thankful to have worked with and known him.”

Jamie Vardy followed that up with his own comment. The current Leicester forward wrote: “I don’t have the words right now. Just gutted. RIP Shakey.”
“Absolutely gutted at the news,” Danny Drinkwater said. “A needle in a haystack of the sport, one of the most genuine humans I have ever had the pleasure to work for and with! Gutted. RIP Shakes.”
Former teammate Danny Simpson also wrote: “Gutted. Words can’t describe what this man did for me and my career at Leicester and beyond. I’m so thankful to have had him in my life. He was an unbelievable coach but an even better human being. RIP Shakey.”
Away from Leicester, tributes continued to come from elsewhere. Manchester Citywinger Jack Grealish also penned a heartfelt message on Instagram.
The England star wrote: “Shakey. One of the greatest people I’ve ever met not only in football but in life. Last month was texting me when I didn’t make the euros squad whilst he was ill shows the type of man he was! An absolute heart of gold! Everyone really will miss you Shakey. Absolutely devastated. Sending all my love to his family.”
